No Amazon, I do not want your Kindle Fire

Amazon have this week started a price war with both Google and Apple over their new range of Kindle Fire tablets. The three new models will be available in the UK for the first time, and are priced compellingly, starting at just £129 for the basic model, and undercutting Google on storage space by offering 16GB devices at the same price as the 8GB Nexus 7. Amazon’s baulchy approach is clearly visible in their sales blurb. It is disingenuous to say the Fire HD is the most advanced 7 inch Read more [...]

Amazon opens App Store doors to the UK

Amazon has today launched the Android App Store in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. It marks a significant step for the retailing goliath and could spell the arrival of the new Kindle Fire. You can now get the Amazon Appstore by visiting    www.amazon.com/amazonappstoreapp. Although we would wait a little while to start shppping as right now it appears to be having a little difficulty. There is no free app of the day and many apps will now download (even free ones). Presumably this Read more [...]

Amazon puts the breaks on 8.9 inch Kindle Fire tablet

Amazon have been rumoured to be working on a 8.9″ variant of its Kindle Fire tablet. That rumour was quashed today with the news that Amazon are going full tilt with a 10.1″ tablet instead. 10.1″ inches meaning it wants to go up against the Apple iPad after winning the budget tablet market in impressive fashion over the winter. I say winning the market in the winter because the last quarter has offered less than impressive sales figures according to industry insiders. Now that Google is Read more [...]

Nvidia Tegra 3 tablets aimed at sub-£130 bracket incoming

Nvidia wants value end tablets on the market as soon as possible according to an article in the New York Times. They are targeting the sub-$199 price point and wants to see them hit the shelves this summer. Spurned in by the sales of the Amazon Kindle Fire, and following lacklustre sales of top end Android tablets, the Taiwanese chipset vendor clearly thinks the value tier is where they can make the most money. Nvdia’s CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang, also fired a warning shot against Android tablet manufacturers Read more [...]

Android Market website now recognises root and non-standard devices

Probably one for the geeks only, it seems that Google is supporting rooted devices and those which do not come with Android Market as standard. These include the likes of the Amazon Kindle Fire and the Andy Pad, as well as anything with root access. If you are ‘into’ custom ROMs such as CyanogenMod then this should all apply. But I say ‘should’ because I have been running Cyanogen on the resident Galaxy S and it appears to not have been an issue. Either I am totally wrong or this is old news. Either Read more [...]

Kobo Vox - Android Tablet and eReader

Kobo Vox brings the Fire fight to Amazon

One benefit of owning a Samsung Galaxy Note is the Readers Hub functionality which is a slightly longer drawn out way of accessing the excellent Kobo ebook app. I don’t mind saying that I like the Kobo software very much. While it is not head an shoulders better than Amazon’s Kindle, it just seems to feel better for some reason. And isn’t the enjoyment factor one of the most important aspects of reading after all? The other thing that I have been doing recently is stroking the boxes of the various Read more [...]

Amazon Kindle Fire reviews surface

Amazon’s Kindle Fire is new winging its way across the USA to salivating punters eyeing a bargain tablet and reviews are springing up. I would urge readers to check out the exhaustingly in-depth review from The Verge a read as it ticks all the boxes. Overall, they think it’s a great piece of kit, albeit with a few caveats. Must notably; Indeed. 6GB of usable memory is not a lot. But of greater concern is a point that I’ve raised before on this whole ‘fragmentation’ concept; On the day where Google Read more [...]
