ASUS FonePad gives fondleslab competition nightmares for £179

Asus are not finished in the crazy name game with a little sibling for the Padfone Infinity: a seven inch HSPA+ 3G capable tablet called the Fonepad. See what they did there? It sports a 1.2GHz Intel Atom processor with 1GB of RAM, a PowerVR SGX540 GPU, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and a 4,270mAH battery. Despite a lack of oodles of processor cores, the £179 price point is going to give the Nexus 7 a flight considering the 3G Nexus is £70 more expensive. The other thing to give the competition the willies Read more [...]

HP Slate 7

HP excises the ghosts of TouchPads gone by with Slate 7

HP will be hoping that a little sojourn into tablet technology does not end as badly as it’s previous efforts. The TouchPad was a debaclé that lost HP a significant amount of credibility, but the Slate 7 takes a totally different tact. Rather than assault the iPad, HP’s new fondleslab instead looks to have a fight with the budget end of the spectrum i.e. the Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire. On the face of it, the Slate 7 is a good looking device with an appropriate specification  Dual Read more [...]

HP is turning to Android for its tablet and smartphone software

HP is preparing to reenter the smart phone market according to The Verge. Those with memories past the last two years will know that the last time HP released a smart phone they had less than desirable outcomes. In short they murdered Palm’s WebOS in the form of the Pre and TouchPad devices. The TouchPad in particular was no match for the iPad 2 and resulted in the Great Fire Sale of 2010. We got hold of one of the 32Gb varieties and grew shock of it within months. The news comes as a surprise Read more [...]

Acer Iconia B1

Acer Iconia B1 breaks the £100 Android tablet barrier

If the recent deluge of cut price Android tablets was an indicator of things to come, Acer has taken a step further with their Iconia B1 tablet which is now on sale for less than £100. My recent review of their previous Android effort  the A110 left something to be desired due to the poor screen although it was a versatile and quick device. The B1 does not share the Tegra underpinnings of the A110, this time married to a Dual Core Cortex A9 1.2GHz processor, 512MB RAM and 8GB Flash Read more [...]

TimesPlus Nexus Offer

Get a Nexus 7 for £50 with The Times

The Times is offering a deal where you can get an Asus Nexus 7 for only £50. The catch? You have to sign up to an 18 month subscription to the digital editions of  The Times and Sunday Times. Is this a good deal? Yes…if you read The Times of course. And there is the rub. It seems that this is important for two reasons. Firstly that this is a general acceptance of the commercial power of the Nexus 7; it is cheap enough to support these promotions. Could you imagine the expense of including Read more [...]

Samsung Google Nexus 10 – PPI matters right?

It is a sure sign of the times when the competition is outpacing Apple’s iPad. A once irrepressible gloat factor of the iPad’s ‘retina’ screen has now been given its marching orders with the Nexus 10. Samsung have upped the resolution to produce a stunning 300 pixels per inch (ppi) which makes the iPad 3, on a specification level at least, seem lacking. Of course, in reality this makes little difference but far be it from me to give Apple a free pass. Numbers and facts speak for themselves Read more [...]

Apple “apology” appears in UK press

It was a matter of time but Apple have finally gotten around to printing their clarification of allegations made in British courts that Samsung copied the design of the iPad. The advert on page 5 of today’s Guardian is somewhat more reserved than their pithy response from their website. It is pretty matter of fact to be honest, which is probably the more intelligent way of burying the story on the same day that the iPad mini goes on sale. The interesting part is the clear statement that there is Read more [...]
